Rural and Urban Places - Darling Harbour

Rural and Urban Places – Darling Harbour supports Stage 6 Geography and focuses on a case study of an urban place - Darling Harbour, highlighting:

  • The location and character of the place
  • Geographical processes, both physical and human, that have shaped the identity of the place
  • Cultural, economic and political links to other places
  • The nature and changes affecting the place including social economic, and environmental.
  • Responses and strategies, including for sustainability.

Program location

Darling Harbour Precinct NSW

  • Meeting location:- Town Hall steps
  • End location: Pyrmont Bay light rail or ferry terminal. Alternative access arrangements can also be made. 

Approx 2.2 km on mostly flat accessible paths and accessed by public transport. 

Key inquiry question

Investigate the changes in Darling Harbour and evaluate the responses and strategies to these changes. 

Key syllabus outcomes

A Student:

  • analyses rural and urban places for their characteristics, spatial patterns, interactions, and nature and extent of change over time GE-12-01
  • analyses geographical processes and influences, at a range of scales, that form and transform places and environments GE-12-02
  • assesses geographical opportunities and challenges, and the role of varying perspectives and responses in their management GE-12-03
  • evaluates responses and management strategies, at a range of scales, for sustainability GE-12-04
  • synthesises and evaluates relevant geographical information from a variety of sources GE-12-05
  • justifies geographical methods used in geographical inquiry and their relevance in the contemporary world GE-12-06

Integrating the ‘Sustainability’ Cross Curriculum Priority is a program feature.

Skills outcomes

A student:

  • applies geographical inquiry skills and tools, including spatial technologies, fieldwork, and ethical practices, to investigate places and environments GE-12-07
  • communicates and applies geographical understanding, using geographical knowledge, concepts, terms and tools, in appropriate forms GE-12-09

Student Pre-visit and Follow-up Activities

Successful fieldwork visits have direct links to current classroom learning. Pre-visit activities before the excursion will help students better understand their excursion content and provide connectedness and relevance to classroom learning.

Have students visit the Student Support Website, which is provided on booking, and complete any pre-fieldwork activities to familiarise them with the study area.

On the day activities

During the full-day fieldwork excursion, students will:

  • Recap on prior learning with OHEEC teachers 
  • Collect economic, social and environmental data that show the changes in Darling Harbour over time.
  • Evaluate Darling Harbour's sustainability against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. 
  • Collecting qualitative data by interviewing and surveying the public to answer a fieldwork question. 
  • Practice basic geographic skills, including mapping, photo interpretation, observing and recording.

Cost 

  • Government Schools: $15 per student  (GST Free)
  • Non-Government Schools: $25 per student (GST free)
