The STEM / Science professional learning day aims to support teachers to effectively deliver the new Science 7–10 Syllabus (2023) to incorporate STEM projects into teaching and learning programs and to effectively teach the Stage 5 Energy and Enviromental Sustinability topics.  The Program is delivered by DoE Science / STEM  Curriculum Advisors, and Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre Staff. An associated STEM / Science excursion is also available at the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability.

Sessions include: 

  • Unpacking the new Science 7–10 Syllabus (2023)
  • Embedding Sustainable STEM Programs in Your School: Drawing on insights from the award-winning iSTEM program and over two decades of experience leading STEM initiatives across NSW, this session will guide participants in defining what makes an effective and sustainable STEM program. The presentation will provide practical strategies to help teachers design and implement high-impact STEM programs that integrate real-world sustainability concepts. Participants will explore how to align STEM projects with curriculum outcomes while fostering critical thinking, innovation, and environmental stewardship within their school communities.
  • Teaching the 'EnergyTopic and resource support
  • Teaching the ‘Environmental Sustainability topic and resource
  • Demonstration of STEM @ The Coal Loader Stage 5 program hands-on activities.

Date: Monday 21st July, Term 3 Staff Development Day

Registration: 8.30 – 9.00

Start: 9am

Venue: Genia McCaffrey Room, Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability, Waterhen Drive Waverton. 

The Centre is a 15 minute walk from Waverton Station, or on-street parking is available on nearby Balls Head Drive or Waterhen Drive

DoE teachers can register their participation through their  NESA / Teacher Accreditation / ETAMS account under Elective Professional Development.

The Course addresses the following Standards

2.1.2 Apply knowledge of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area to develop engaging teaching activities.

2.3.2 Design and implement learning and teaching programs using knowledge of curriculum, assessment and reporting requirements.

3.2.2 Plan and implement well-structured learning and teaching programs or lesson sequences that engage students and promote learning.

3.3.2 Select and use relevant teaching strategies to develop knowledge, skills, problem-solving, and critical and creative thinking.

7.4.2 Participate in professional and community networks and forums to broaden knowledge and improve practice.
